James Buchannan is often labeled the worst president in the history of the United States. Historians suggest his inability to stop secession and handle slavery was a catalyst for the Civil War.
Interestingly, Abraham Lincoln came into office right after Buchannan. And many consider Lincoln one of the best presidents.
This probably isn’t a coincidence.
Where the leadership is poor, there is an opportunity. Even if you’re not the best at something, just being better than the person before can make you appear the best.
People in my basketball league are constantly complaining to the referees…
“Horrible call.”
“Ref, are you blind?!”
“Ref check your voicemail…you’ve missed a few calls!”
If there is a very poor referee, even one that is slightly less irritating can feel refreshing.
Contrast can create a favorable comparison. The previous leader becomes a benchmark that you’re compared against.
Take advantage of the opportunity!
