Arrogance by definition is “The state or quality of being arrogant; overbearing pride.” (Wordnik) It is when you overbear the pridefulness gained by thinking you have no superiors. It is so harmful, that when an arrogant person experiences some failure or disgrace, they beat themselves up about it because they expect better of themselves.

Coming to the awful realization that you aren’t perfect, especially when it is later in life, must be terrible.

There are two main problems that come with arrogance:

  1. Closeminded-ness: If you have no higher power, what more is there to learn? In other words, arrogance can lead to not taking advice from others or improving oneself.
  2. Alienation: many times arrogant individuals will separate themselves from others due to their feeling of superiority to those people. This only hurts the person separating themselves and usually makes them feeling sad or depressed because others “just don’t come up to their standards”.

In the end, it only harms one person; yourself. That is why it should be precariously avoided.
