Personal opinion: flying is fun. You get a free drink, great views, and uninterrupted writing time.

As I’m writing this, I’m on a plane. The lady in front of me has leaned her seat so far back that she’s basically in my lap (lol). I was thinking about ways we could make the flying experience even better; here’s what I came up with:

  1. Let the First Class board last. Maybe it’s just me, but I like to spend less time on a tight airplane. If I ever flew First Class, I’d want to get on last, not first. Comment if you think I’m crazy. I’d love to hear your opinion. Maybe first class could have a separate lounge at the gate where you can get a drink and relax while everyone else boards. Once finished, First Class could simply hop on and take off.
  2. Vary up the terminals. Walking through the copy-paste terminals can feel boring, monotonous, and humdrum. It’s not bad…but it could be better. Maybe airports could work with high school designers to make each terminal have a different feel or culture. It would make flying a lot more vibrant, and give students a chance to display their skills. Wouldn’t you love to say, “I helped design Terminal B of the Atlanta airport”?
  3. Give this lady in front of me a place to lie completely flat. Her neck looks pained; let’s put some bunk beds just above/below the main cabin! It turns out Air New Zealand has already designed an economy sleep pod! For about $500, you can rent a 6 foot 4 inch bed for 4 hours. On long flights, this must feel really nice. $500 is steep, but as the integration becomes cheaper, I bet the price will drop.
  4. Make the seats more vertically efficient. In June of 2022, a Spanish industrial designer revealed an idea that might change airplanes forever. The Chaise Longue Economy Seat is a double-decker airplane seating concept that gives economy passengers more room, more space for baggage, and no more leaning back on other people (like this lady…*cough cough*). While the concept has not yet passed certain safety tests, it is a groundbreaking idea. Here’s a picture:
