There are four things that give something value:

  1. Utility (how useful it is)
  2. Scarcity (how rare it is)
  3. Meaning (sentimental attachment)
  4. Demand (how much people want it)

That last one is especially interesting. The other three are tied to function, rarity, or personal significance. But demand can exist for a much simpler reason; people enjoy something.

For example:

People enjoy sports for the thrills.

People enjoy comedy for the laughs.

People enjoy tattoo artistry for the creativity.

Sports, comedy shows, and tattoo artistry…enjoyment is the only thing giving value to these otherwise useless skills.

Once you realize this, it opens up a world of opportunity. Enjoyment isn’t only something people seek, it can support a business. Even with a niche audience, digital distribution makes you even easier to find.

If you love creating something that others genuinely enjoy consuming, try making it a business. You only live once.
