Why are apartments called apartments if they’re not apart? Why aren’t houses called apartments? Today I set out to answer that question with a lot of research. Here’s what I found:

“The word ‘apartment’ comes from the French word appartement and the Italian word appartimento, both of which mean ‘a separated place.’” (Wonderpolis.org)

If you think about it, it makes sense. Although each place in an apartment building is attached to another, they are all “apart” residences. Sadly, there is a reason.

Still…just be simpler and call them a suite or condo. Those two make so much more sense.
